Cesafinews | The Cebu City government requires bike proprietors to register | CEBU CITY – In November of this year, as part of a plan to strictly implement the bike lane policy on main thoroughfares, the Cebu City government will require cyclists to register their bikes.

In accordance with City Ordinance 2408, according to Bernard Maraasin, executive director of the Cebu City Bike Lane Board, cyclists will be required to register their bicycles in their respective barangay.

Maraasin stated that those who neglect to register their bikes could face penalties.

“We began deploying personnel for the dissemination of safety-related information to motorcyclists. We also need to educate them in preparation for the cycle registration,” Maraasin told reporters here, underscoring that registration is free.

According to him, the office responsible for enforcing bike lanes is currently engaged in the development of systems for bike registration that will generate data on the number of bicycle proprietors.

He advised motorcycle owners to register their vehicles on time to avoid being stopped and questioned.

“If they are flagged down, it will be a hassle for them, as law enforcement officers may flag them down and seize their bikes if they are unable to produce proper documentation,” he added.

The official stated that the Cebu City Traffic Office has assigned 25 bike lane enforcers to apprehend automobiles and motorcycles that park in designated bike lanes.

He stated that enforcement officers could issue citations to motorists who obstruct bike lanes.

From January to August of this year, the bike lane office in this city recorded over 5,000 automobile and motorcycle arrests for blocking bike lanes.(via PNA)
