Cesafinews | 66 public schools in Iloilo City are back in session | ILOILO CITY – Classes have resumed in 66 public schools in Iloilo City, although several classrooms in seven schools continue to serve as evacuation centers as of Thursday.

In an interview, Ma. Luz de los Reyes, superintendent of the Iloilo City Schools Division, stated that classes utilized unaffected classrooms.

She stated that they consider August 31 to be the first day of school because inclement weather prevented schools from opening on August 29, despite the fact that they were prepared to receive students.

The 30th of August saw the return of teachers and school administrators to schools affected by inundation in order to conduct cleanup.

Approximately 72,000 students are enrolled in kindergarten through senior year of high school, according to a quick tally on their information system, a number that is lower than the previous school year.

“We still lack approximately 15,000 to surpass the previous data,” de los Reyes stated.

She ascribed the low number to the ongoing encoding of enrollees and the indecisiveness of parents regarding the enrollment of their children.

14 classrooms at the Tiu Cho Teg-Ana Ros Foundation Integrated Farm School, an undetermined number of classrooms at the Judith Lazarraga Tiongco Memorial School, five classrooms at the Severo Abeto Elementary School, four classrooms at the Sto. Domingo Elementary School, three classrooms at the Balantang Elementary School, five classrooms at the E. Yusay Memorial School, and seven classrooms at the Arevalo Elementary School are still serving as evacuation centers.

Principals were prepared for contingencies, according to De los Reyes, so classes continued without interruption despite the use of some classrooms.

Representatives from the central office of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Health (DOH) visited the Iloilo City Schools Division on Thursday in order to appraise the implementation of Oplan Kalusugan sa DepEd (OK sa DepEd).

She explained that the Oplan Kalusugan addresses all health and nutrition concerns of schools under the Deped, including adolescent reproductive health; mental health; feeding program; water, sanitation, and hygiene; and medical and dental services.(via PNA)
