Cesafinews | 537 DepEd schools in Antique finally start the school year | SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – Local governments in Antique have ended the school bans, and all 537 public schools will be back in session on Thursday.

“Classes have started again in all 18 towns of the province now that the weather has improved,” Eric Cortejo, a DepEd Antique information officer, said in an interview on Thursday.

Since Tuesday, August 29, local governments in the province have canceled classes for two days because of bad weather caused by the southwest monsoon (habagat) and made worse by Typhoon Goring.

He said that DepEd Antique has sent out eight teams to keep an eye on the start of classes in the different schools, where as of August 30 there were 135,652 students in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

“So far, Thursday’s school opening has gone well,” he said, adding that some students got there as early as 7:15 a.m.

He said that some parents helped their kids get to school, especially kindergarteners who were going to school for the first time.

In order to follow Vice President Sara Duterte’s Department Order 21, series of 2023, the classes are cleaned of “unnecessary artwork, decorations, tarpaulins, and posters” when they are checked.

Cortejo said, “Classrooms in the province’s schools are empty so that students can pay attention to their lessons.”

In the meantime, big schools like the Antique National School, which has 6,820 students, have started switching classes to help students and keep classrooms from getting too crowded.

The morning shift goes from 7:15 to 12:15, and the afternoon shift goes from 1:00 to 6:00. There are 40 students on each shift.
